Formic Acid (MAQS and Formic Pro)

Formic acid is naturally found in honey in very tiny amounts. Products like Mite-Away Quick Strips and Formic Pro use a concentrated dose of formic acid to kill mites.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has approved these specific products to be used with honey supers on.

However, there is a catch. Formic acid is very sensitive to heat. You cannot use it if the outside temperature is going to be above 85 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is too hot, the acid vaporizes too quickly. This can kill your queen bee and your brood.

HopGuard 3

This is a newer treatment. It is made from hop compounds. The same hops used to make beer. It is safe to use while honey supers are on the hive.

It is a great option for a quick knockdown of mites during the summer honey flow.

Once the honey is safely inside your house, immediately test and treat the hive. This drops the mite numbers before the bees raise their winter cluster. Healthy winter bees are the secret to colony survival.

What Happens if You Make a Mistake?

We are all human. Mistakes happen. What do you do if you accidentally left your honey supers on during an Apivar or Thymol treatment?

First, you cannot eat that honey. You cannot sell it. You cannot give it to your friends or family.

Can you feed it back to the bees? The general consensus is yes. The bees can eat the honey during the winter. The chemical residue in the honey is usually not high enough to hurt the adult bees.

However, you should permanently mark those wax frames. Do not ever use those frames for human honey harvesting again. The wax will hold onto that chemical memory for a very long time. It is best to rotate those frames down into the brood box permanently.
